In recent weeks, US President Joe Biden announced a new military aid package for Ukraine, reinforcing American support for Kyiv in its fight against Russia. However, this move has generated significant discontent among a considerable portion of the American population.

A recent CNN poll revealed a clear and deep division in US public opinion regarding continued support for Ukraine through constant allocations and funding. According to the survey, 55% of respondents believe Congress should not authorize new funding for Ukraine, while the remaining 45% favor continued engagement.

What makes this division even more apparent is the change in opinion over time. When the war in Ukraine began in February 2022, 62% of Americans favored sending weapons abundantly. Now, only 43% support this option, while the majority appears skeptical about additional funding.

This split in public consensus is emerging at a crucial moment, just over a year before the 2024 presidential elections, when a confrontation between Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump could occur. Trump has continued to criticize the current administration and argued that he could end the Ukraine conflict quickly through negotiations.

Americans who support aid to Ukraine are also divided on how assistance should be provided. Intelligence gathering has 63% support, while 53% favor training Ukrainian forces. Surprisingly, only 43% support direct weapons provision, while only a minority of 17% would welcome the presence of American soldiers on the battlefield.

However, one point of agreement among Americans is pessimism about the conflict’s duration. Eight out of ten Americans, regardless of political orientation, believe the war in Ukraine will continue for a prolonged period. This awareness of a protracted conflict could have significant repercussions on the future of American assistance to Ukraine and the direction of US foreign policy. The division over the approach to adopt reflects the uncertainty and ongoing debate about how to address the crisis in Ukraine and its impacts on American domestic politics.
